Main winter destination, Campos do Jordão!

The next destination for Let’s Travel the World, which I have actually already talked about here.. is Campos do Jordão, our Brazilian Switzerland!!

Let’s go?

Campos do Jordão is a Brazilian municipality located in the countryside of the state of São Paulo, more precisely in Serra da Mantiqueira, and is part of the Metropolitan Region of Vale do Paraíba and Litoral Norte.

Its history begins when Gaspar Vaz opens in 1703 the first path from Pindamonhangaba to Sapucaí, with the purpose of transporting gold from the mines of Itajubá.

In 1825, the land was sold to Brigadier Manoel Rodrigues Jordão. The people of the region called the land “Os Campos”, and after the purchase it was called “Os Campos do Jordão”!

Then in 1874, Mateus da Costa Pinto acquired a part of the land, thus founding the village of São Mateus do Imbiri, currently called Vila Jaguaribe. The village developed, becoming a district of the municipality of São Bento do Sapucaí.

Due to the climate, the region became a reference in the treatment of tuberculosis, and several sanatoriums were created. It attracted doctors and patients from all over the country, and some of them took up residence and work there.

In 1934, the region was emancipated with the creation of the municipality, with the name of Campos do Jordão, in honor of Brigadier Jordão. From the 1950s onwards, advances in medicine made tuberculosis no longer such a dangerous disease. And with that, the city began to attract tourists.

Today, Campos do Jordão has tourism as its main economic activity and is one of the main winter destinations in Brazil!
