Let's Travel the World

Welcome to São José dos Campos!

Since Let’s Travel the World started a new phase, there’s nothing better than changing it up here too, right?!

From now on, I will also write about the destinations that appear on Bora’s YouTube channel!

And the first could not be different! My hometown... São José dos Campos (in the countryside of the state of São Paulo)! Let’s go!

Its history begins at the end of the 16th century, when Aldeia do Rio Comprido was formed, a Jesuit farm that used livestock farming to prevent invasions by the pioneers. However, on September 10, 1611, a law caused the Jesuits to be expelled and the villagers scattered.

They only returned years later, settling in what is now the Igreja Matriz de São José dos Campos (Mother Church), in the center of the city. The area where São José dos Campos began had a pleasant climate and a strategic position in case of invaders.

However, in 1759, the Jesuits were expelled from Brazil and all the order’s possessions were confiscated by Portugal. At that time, Luis Antonio de Souza Botelho Mourão, better known as Morgado de Mateus, took over the government of São Paulo. And one of his achievements was to elevate several hamlet to the category of village, and one of them was São José!

The non July 27, 1767, the hamlet was transformed into a village changing its name to São José do Paraíba. In this way, the pillory and the City Hall (old), symbols of the new condition, were erected.

São José dos Campos gained national prominence in the so-called sanatorium phase, when countless patients sought the city’s climate in search of a cure for tuberculosis. And in 1924, the Vicentina Aranha Sanatorium was inaugurated, the largest in the country!

And another very important moment for my dear city was the industrialization process that gained impulse with the installation, in 1950, of the Aerospace Technical Center (CTA) and the inauguration of Via Dutra, in 1951.

Recently, São José dos Campos has received the title of Smart City, being the only one in Brazil and one of the 79 cities in the world with this title.
