Next stop: New Orleans

Atualizado: 14 de abr. de 2023

New Orleans or La Nuevelle-Orléans is well known for its multicultural legacy (French, Spanish and African American cultural influence), its music and cuisine, and for being more tolerant of racial and etnic differences when compared to other American cities.

Let’s check out some of the history of this mutiracial city?

New Orleans is located in the State of Lousiana, being the lowest area of the state, due to this, it is surrounded by dikes.

Founded in 1718 by French colonists, under the name of Nouvelle Orléans, in honor of the regent and head of state of France, Philip II, Duke of Orléans. It became, in 1722, the capital of the French Frence Colonial Province of Lousiana, part of New France.

However, according to the terms of the Treaty of Paris, the entire region of Louisiana west of the Mississipi River, including New Orleans, came under the control of the Spanish in 1763. They ceded to the United States the right to use the city’s ports in 1795.

In 1800, Spain and France made a secret agreement, in which Louisiana returned to French control. In 1803, the Americans bought Louisiana and officially took possession of the city in December of that year. After 2 years, New Orleans was granted city status.

As early as 1861, Louisiana seceded from the United States and joined the Confederate United States of America. In the same year, the American Civil War began, and in 1862, New Orleans returned to the domain of the United States. The city did not have major destruction, but its economy entered a major recession that would last about a decade.

Under the motto (unofficial) “Laissez les bons temps rouler” (literal translation: Let the good times roll), it had its population growth interrupted several times, due to the yellow fever epidemics, the biggest one in 1853, and was hit in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina (the most damaging Hurricane in US history).

With several nicknames that describe its characteristics, The Crescent City (which it describes its format along the river), The Big Easy (reference made by the musicians) and The City that Care Forgot (associated with the easy relationship between the city’s inhabitants), NOLA is a major industrial, distribution and tourism center and is considered the busiest port center in the United States.
